Which campaign of David Hargrave's does the World Book of Khaas provide information on?

Who is David Hargrave? David Hargrave is the author and originator of the Arduin mythos and the game of the same name. He is one of the early giant whose shoulders we stand on today when we play or make rpg games. More information about him, and his life's work and love, Arduin & Khaas, are found everywhere on this website. You can venture to the David Hargrave tribute page for some personal views on him and his work by fans as well.

What or where is Arduin? The nation of Arduin is the land of the nexus, its legendary gates, and the famous accords of peace that ended the Wars of When. Arduin lies on the third continent of the world of Khaas, the one known as Khaora. Arduin is also a very wild and diverse place, and the joys and perils of high civilization and learning stand almost next to the deepest wilds and dangers in existent. The nexus of Arduin keeps the nation in a constant state of flux, and change and tolerance are the keys to Arduin’s survival. The famous and legendary land of Arduin is covered with over 100 pages of detail in the World Book of Khaas.  In those pages is the information detailing the inner workings of the kingdom's government, the wild ranges of its topography, and intriguing nexus gates that make it literally the crossroads of the Multiverse.  Joining this intoxicating brew is the diversity of Arduin’s people and the quirks and oddities of its culture.  Never again wonder whose lands lie near the Whisper Trees or which noble rules near Leiberton.  After reading its contents you will never have to guess when the next Arduinian tells you, "to do the lash" or offers you a cup of Klog!

Can you tell me more about Khoara? Khaora is known to many as the third continent.  The land has a more pleasant climate than perhaps any of the other land masses of Khaas. Daily temperatures vary considerably, seasonal variations occur and the air is clear and dry (except in the extreme south coast, where the continent lies closer to the equator and has less seasonal variance and is quite humid in regions).  The interior of the continent has a harsh dry desert were the easterly winds cannot surmount the tall mountains and rage around them instead, driving vast amounts of moisture inland. Rogue winds blow frequently into the Silvandian Sea and create monsoons that blast inland until they break on the Heaven Wall Mountains. The average temperature ranges from 50 degrees to 118 degrees Fahrenheit, with cooler temperatures in the north of the continent averaging 32 to 68 degrees and even cooler near the north coast. There the very land crackles under a sheet of ice and even the very ice seems to snap and break as is blows off the cold, Ice Mist Sea. The landmass measures over 3,000 miles long by 2,200 miles wide and is home to the country of Arduin, famous for its nexus gates.  Furthermore, the continent is the most populated, civilized, and diverse in regard to different cultures, people, and creatures. This diversity stems as much because of historic events as from the nexus gates.

How much David Hargrave material is in the World Book of Khaas? A valid question deserving of an equally valid and truthful answer. Every bit we could put into it was crammed, stuffed, and beaten into the volume until it was nigh to explode (ever wonder why it went from 450 to 800 pages?) and we had to call "uncle!" What was available to use was carefully scrutinized, editing magik was applied, and where gaps lied they were filled to provide as full and complete a picture of the world as possible.

Are you ever going to publish this thing? Yes.  The decision to add in more material to provide a better, higher quality product moved dates to 1Q 2004 vice 4Q 2003.  We know you will be pleased with the greater attention to detail and near 300 extra pages of material.

What is this Alarums and Excursions magazine I saw in Arduin Grimoire and did David Hargrave have Arduin / Khaas material there?  Alarums and Excursions is a photocopied monthly roleplaying game Amateur Press Association (APA) with contributors from across the US and abroad, active since 1975.  You can find out more about them at their website.   David Hargrave contributed to them frequently during his lifetime and there is a quantity of Arduin / Khaas material with the back issues of the magazine.  The website for Alarums and Excursions has detials on how to get some back issues.

Why is this the World of Khaas instead of the World of Arduin?  You pose an interesting and popular question.  David Hargrave used Arduin to indicate both the country and the world.  He used both interchangably many times but eventually began to separate the two in order to instill the full breadth and scope of his world.  Much of his earlier work uses Arduin in the same breath to indicate Arduin, the nation, and Arduin the world.  Only later was there a more and more definitive separation between Arduin the country and Khaas the world.

Will you archive previously provided downloads and have them available?  Yes.  As needed the web site will be remodeled in order to accomodate such additions. Expect changes to the website to continue in order to make downloads available to interested fans.

How can I get a copy of the Concordance (a downloadable version of the Gazetteer)?  The simplest way is to join the Khaas List.  The list is unobtrusive and used only to inform members of updates to the website and infrequent, special notices.  Youn find more information about it at the Khaas List section.

Which campaign of David Hargrave's games does the World Book of Khaas provide information on?  David Hargrave ran at least three discernable campaign cycles.  He speaks about them throughout the Arduin Grimoires and in his writing.  We have worked diligently to weld all the information available into one complete picture and provide the most complete and detailed world view of Khaas.  Due to the volume of information, the greatest forcus is on Khaora, home to Arduin and its nexus gates.  To say something is from one campaign or another is tough, not only for us but for players originating in each different time slice of David Hargrave's campaigns.
